“Napoleon”, a scratchboard painting by Canadian artist Mark Summers from his Wicked Portraits series. (via Leonel Toribio)

Scratchbord people, flippin’ scratchboard! Which means someone used a knife and carefully removed the unwanted portions of the art…also maybe the most elaborate scratchboard I’ve ever seen BRB have to look into this…
Okay, in case you didn’t do scratchboard art in school, here’s the deal. It’s a sheet of card stock/vellum bristol that has been covered first by a thin layer of chalk, then by a layer of enamel, usually black. The design is scratched into the surface, generally a white pattern into the black surface. I’ll post an image.
This is completely different but entirely possible with scratchboard - where you’d ink your own colors onto the page then scrape away that which was not needed. It’s also exceedingly well done - though it looks more like an etching or an aquatint.
Anyway, I want it on my dash :)
