Entrance to Skull Cave, Lava Beds National Monument, CA ©Laura Quick
It was a sweltering 100 degrees at the surface. Going into the cave was marvelously cool. I wish that I’d shot the entrance to show scale. This entrance is probably 80’ tall and the cave (an old lava tube) goes back some 500 feet dropping down so that there’s actually ice at the bottom.
Lava Beds has the largest concentration of caves in the continental United States. The National Monument is on the border of California and Oregon. The ranger station provides flashlights and lets you go exploring on your own. Pretty awesome!
